40+ Years of Aviation Excellence in Louisiana
From humble beginnings to becoming a cornerstone of South Louisiana aviation, Ken Perry's story is one of passion, perseverance, and community service.
Ken Perry's love affair with aviation began in the early 1970s. Growing up in Louisiana, he was fascinated by the helicopters that served the burgeoning offshore oil industry. What started as childhood wonder would eventually become a lifelong dedication to aviation excellence.
After serving his community in various capacities, Ken recognized the need for reliable aviation services in South Louisiana. The oil boom was bringing new opportunities to the region, and Perry Flying Center was born from Ken's vision to provide world-class aviation support right here in Patterson.
Perry Flying Center was founded on July 1st, 1983, by Ken Perry, his father M.C. Perry, and stepmother Joycelyn Perry. What began as a full-service fixed-base operation for various aircraft has evolved into one of Louisiana's most respected aviation facilities, adapting to serve the changing needs of our community and industry.
When the local oil economy experienced a downturn in the mid-1980s, Ken Perry demonstrated the entrepreneurial spirit that would define the company's success. Recognizing the ongoing needs of helicopter operators serving the offshore industry, Perry Flying Center constructed dedicated bunkrooms and offices specifically designed for flight crews. This strategic pivot ensured the facility remained vital to Louisiana's energy sector even during challenging economic times.
In 1985, Perry Flying Center opened the Eagle's Nest restaurant, creating a unique destination that attracted both fly-in customers and offshore pilots. The restaurant became a gathering place for the aviation community, offering not just excellent food but a chance for pilots and aviation enthusiasts to share stories and build relationships. To keep the airport visible and engaged with the broader community, Ken organized various events including air shows and car shows that brought thousands of visitors to Patterson.
In 1992, Hurricane Andrew delivered a devastating blow to Perry Flying Center, causing substantial damage to the facilities. The destruction was so severe that it took over a year to rebuild. However, this setback only strengthened Ken Perry's resolve. The rebuilt facility was better than ever, incorporating improvements and lessons learned from the hurricane experience that would prove invaluable in future storm responses.
In 1993, Perry Flying Center welcomed Patterson Avionics as a tenant, significantly expanding the facility's service capabilities. This partnership meant that aircraft owners could now access comprehensive avionics services without leaving the airport, making PTN an even more attractive destination for pilots and aircraft operators throughout the region.
In 2004, during a period of heightened national security following the September 11th attacks, Perry Flying Center had the honor of hosting "Air Force Two" during a high-security terrorism alert. This event demonstrated the facility's capability to handle the most demanding aviation operations and security requirements, earning recognition from federal agencies for professionalism and preparedness.
The true character of Perry Flying Center was revealed during the catastrophic 2005 hurricane season. When Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the Gulf Coast, the facility became a critical staging point for rescue operations. Ken Perry and his team worked tirelessly, providing fuel, maintenance, food, and shelter to hundreds of rescue flight crews. The airport saw its activity triple during this period, with helicopters landing and taking off around the clock to save lives.
The response required rapid infrastructure expansion. Perry Flying Center quickly added additional facilities and services to meet the unprecedented demand. This wasn't just about business – it was about serving humanity in its darkest hour. The dedication shown during these disasters earned Perry Flying Center lasting recognition from the U.S. Coast Guard, military units, and countless rescue organizations.
One of the hallmarks of Perry Flying Center has been the remarkable stability and loyalty of its staff. Val Blanchard served as Office Manager until her retirement in 2016 after 31 years of dedicated service. Scott LeBlanc, the Ground Services Manager, celebrated 20 years with the company in 2017. The maintenance staff collectively represents over 50 years of combined service to Perry Flying Center. This continuity has created a depth of experience and knowledge that benefits every customer who visits the facility.
M.C. Perry, affectionately known as "The Chief," was a cornerstone of Perry Flying Center until his passing in 1999. His wisdom, work ethic, and commitment to excellence set the standard for everything the company would become. After his father's death, Ken Perry made a solemn commitment to continue building upon the excellent reputation The Chief had helped establish, ensuring that his legacy would live on through exceptional service and community dedication.
Today, Perry Flying Center continues to evolve while staying true to its founding principles. The facility remains a vital link in Louisiana's aviation infrastructure, supporting everything from private pilots to major helicopter operations serving the offshore energy industry. Ken Perry's vision of providing world-class aviation services with genuine Louisiana hospitality remains at the heart of everything Perry Flying Center does.
As the aviation industry continues to change, Perry Flying Center stands ready to adapt and grow, just as it has for over four decades. The commitment to safety, service, and community that Ken Perry established in 1983 continues to guide the facility today, ensuring that Perry Flying Center will remain "Louisiana's Gateway to the Sky" for generations to come.
